What is TOOTH WHITENING? Tooth whitening is a bleaching process that lightens discolorations of enamel and dentin.
What causes tooth discoloration? There are many cause. The most common include aging and the consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc.
During tooth formation the use of antibiotics such as tetracycline or the ingestion of excessive fluoride can also lead to tooth discoloration.
Who can benefit from TOOTH WHITENING? Almost anyone. However, the degree of whiteness will vary depending on the structure of the teeth. Certain discolorations whiten better then others. Darker stains such as those caused by antibiotics are more difficult to whiten.
Do many people whiten their teeth? Yes!!! More people then you would ever imagine are undergoing this smile enhancement procedure.
Is whitening safe? Yes. Research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. Bleaching is NOT recommended for pregnant or lactating women or for children under the age of 13.
How long do the results last? Just like when you color your hair periodic touch ups are necessary to maintain your whiter smile.
Are there any side effects? Sensitivity during the treatment may occur with some patients. This sensitivity is not long term and will dissipate after the treatment.
